Build A Dope Home DJ Setup!

A home DJ setup should make you want to switch the decks on. Space for your records, cables you can actually find, and controls at a comfortable height matter more than another strip of LEDs.
An IKEA DJ booth built around KALLAX shelving can be a practical starting point. The trick is choosing furniture around your equipment—not discovering after assembly that your controller hangs over the edge.
This guide brings together a current shopping list, US and European IKEA links, build videos and a step-by-step planning process. Start with the measurements below before ordering anything.

The quick answer: what should you buy?
For a straightforward setup, start with one eight-cube KALLAX arranged horizontally, a matching KALLAX underframe if its finished height suits you, and optional storage boxes. Keep speakers and a laptop on separate suitable stands if they crowd the playing surface.
This route avoids making custom CAPITA-and-LACK shelf modifications a requirement. It still depends on your equipment fitting the surface and staying within the furniture’s published limits.
The horizontal UK/German unit is approximately 146.5 cm wide × 39 cm deep × 76.5 cm high—about 57.7 × 15.4 × 30.1 inches, before an underframe. IKEA sells it under the nominal size 77 × 147 cm. The shallow depth is the measurement to pay attention to. Check the UK dimensions or German listing.
IKEA DJ booth shopping list: US, Europe and UK
These links are for white furniture and black boxes. Germany is the euro-area price example; other European countries have their own prices and stock.
| Item | Quantity | United States | Germany / euro-area example | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eight-cube KALLAX shelving | 1 | Current US KALLAX: $79.99 | KALLAX: €49.99 | KALLAX: £49 |
| Matching wide underframe | 1, if needed for height | Shelf + base bundle: $109.99 total | 146 cm underframe: €20 | 146 cm underframe: £20 |
| DRÖNA storage boxes | 2, optional | 13 × 15 × 13 in: $4.99 each | 33 × 38 × 33 cm: €2.99 each | 33 × 38 × 33 cm: £3 each |
Furniture budget with the underframe and two boxes: $119.97 in the US, €75.97 using the German listings, or £75 in the UK. The US bundle already includes the shelving: do not buy that bundle and the separate shelf as well. These totals exclude delivery, any applicable checkout taxes or fees, wall fixings, tools, stands and DJ equipment. European displayed prices include VAT. Check your local basket before purchasing.
IKEA product numbers differ by market: the current US white shelving listing is 206.316.63, while the UK/German listing is 802.758.87. Old shopping links can redirect. Match the dimensions and configuration, not just the name.
You will also need a tape measure, the tools shown in your exact assembly manual, wall fixings suitable for your wall, and cable ties or reusable straps. A laptop stand and speaker stands are optional purchases determined by your layout, not essential IKEA parts.
Will your controller or turntables fit?
Measure the whole working setup
Lay your equipment out on an existing stable surface first. Measure its width and depth with cables connected, leaving access to headphones, switches and ventilation. If you use a flight case, measure the case too.
For a controller, check the front-to-back dimension before the width. A large all-in-one can be deeper than this furniture even when it looks comfortably narrower. All equipment feet need proper support; do not rely on a photograph to judge fit.
For two decks and a mixer, use this planning calculation:
Required width = left deck + mixer + right deck + the gaps you need to work.
Add space for your hands and connections. For scratching, practise your normal movements in the proposed layout so a laptop stand or speaker is not sitting where your arm needs to go.
Battle position changes the depth
Take the Technics SL-1200MK7 as an example. Its published footprint is 453 × 353 mm, and it weighs approximately 9.6 kg. Turning it through 90 degrees changes the front-to-back footprint from 35.3 cm to 45.3 cm. That exceeds a 39 cm-deep surface. Two of these decks also weigh about 19.2 kg before the mixer and accessories. Technics specifications.
Those calculations are a useful reason to plan before buying. They are not a fit certification: check feet, cable clearance, dust covers and the exact model you own. If you need a deeper battle setup, choose a properly supported deeper work surface or purpose-built DJ desk. Simply laying a larger board on top does not establish a safe new load rating.
Check weight as well as dimensions
The linked UK KALLAX specifies 25 kg maximum on top and 13 kg per shelf; the current US page lists 55 lb on top and 29 lb per shelf. These are separate limits. Count every item on the top, including stands and any added surface, and check the instructions for your exact configuration. IKEA also requires secure anchoring with fixings appropriate to the wall. How to plan and assemble your home DJ booth
1. Choose the position
Check the space with the furniture footprint marked out on the floor. Allow access to sockets and enough room to stand, reach your records and move behind the setup when necessary. Keep the planned cable route clear of walkways.
2. Test the height before ordering
Judge the height at the controls, not just the shelf. A turntable platter and a low-profile controller sit at different heights above the same furniture.
Try your usual mixing posture on a stable surface of a similar height. You should be able to reach the faders and decks without constantly hunching or lifting your shoulders. The US shelf-and-underframe combination is listed at 37 inches tall, roughly 94 cm, before equipment. That is a reference measurement, not a universal ideal.
3. Assemble the exact model you bought
Use the manual supplied with your item, including its tools, orientation and anchoring instructions. Start with these official resources:
- Current US KALLAX assembly instructions — PDF.
- German KALLAX assembly instructions — PDF.
- KALLAX underframe assembly instructions — PDF.
For other revisions, use the Assembly and documents section on your local product page. Keep all structural dividers in place. Follow the specified assembly and fastening sequence rather than transferring drill positions from an older online hack.
4. Finish the furniture before adding gear
Complete the underframe installation, levelling and anchoring as instructed. Check the assembled furniture before loading records or equipment. If the wall construction or fixings are unclear, get appropriate installation advice.
5. Position equipment and route the cables
Place the mixer or controller where you naturally stand, then add the rest of the setup. Leave connectors unstressed and ventilation unobstructed. Label both ends of cables you regularly unplug, and leave enough slack to service connections without pulling equipment forward.
Use storage boxes for headphones, spare leads and adapters. Keep frequently used records within easy reach and distribute storage within the published shelf limits.
6. Do a real practice session
Before adding decoration, try cueing, mixing and reaching for records. Check whether you can see the laptop, use the crossfader freely and plug in headphones without reaching awkwardly. If the setup moves noticeably in use, stop and resolve the support or assembly issue before continuing.
Once that works, add the lamp, artwork or lighting that makes the space yours. The best upgrade is often a setup you can use immediately, without ten minutes of rearranging cables.
Useful IKEA DJ booth videos
These are older independent builds, useful for ideas and seeing different layouts. Their historic prices and modified furniture arrangements should not be treated as current IKEA instructions.

This is the 2020 build previously featured on Doing The Damage. It brings together KALLAX, DRÖNA, CAPITA and LACK components. Use it to explore the raised-shelf approach, then check today’s products and your own equipment requirements. Its original under-£100 framing is historical.

Another useful reference for an economical home booth. The price in the title belongs to the original video; use current local listings when working out your budget.
Do you need CAPITA legs and LACK shelves?
Not for the basic configuration in this guide. Older builds use them to create raised shelves or speaker platforms, but those projects involve a different set of supports and fixings.
Buy them only as part of a fully specified, checked design. A current product with a familiar name is not proof that an old bracket arrangement remains compatible. Keeping a suitable laptop or speaker stand separate can make it easier to change your layout later.
IKEA DJ booth questions
Is KALLAX a good choice for a beginner DJ?
It can be, if your equipment fits, the working height suits you and the setup meets the furniture instructions. A compact controller layout is simpler to plan than a deep, heavy, two-turntable battle setup. Start with what you actually use rather than copying a fully loaded studio photo.
Can I use my existing KALLAX?
Find its article number and matching instructions first. Check its condition, dimensions and compatibility with any proposed underframe. Do not assume a newer model’s accessories or specifications apply to older furniture.
Can I build the booth for under $100?
Possibly with an existing unit or a simpler shopping list, but the new US shelf-and-underframe bundle linked here already exceeds that amount. Budget for the complete usable setup, including fixings and delivery, rather than a headline price from an old video.
Should I add a wider or deeper top?
Only with a properly designed support and fixing arrangement. A new top adds weight and can introduce overhang; it does not automatically increase the furniture’s capacity. If your equipment needs a much deeper surface, selecting a different desk may be the more straightforward solution.
Build the booth around how you DJ
For hip-hop and R&B DJs, the useful details are personal: room for your hands, access to the next record, somewhere sensible for headphones, and a screen you can glance at without losing your position.
Get the measurements and support right first. Then make it look good. A booth that is ready whenever you want to practise is a better investment than a perfect-looking setup that gets in your way.
